Two-thirds of all married women in India are subjected to domestic violence and a shocking 57% of them think it is justified. These figures reveal that not only are the women of this country unsafe within their homes, many of them have been conditioned to accept their fate silently.

We have created a Mahila Nyay Samiti (Women Justice Committee) to monitor the safety of women in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat and help them fight against domestic violence. The council has been assigned seven female volunteer workers who counsel and educate women on the protection of their rights. This group takes the issues of domestic violence to district level authorities and has them filed in the lower courts.

In addition, we hold workshops to promote and propagate the laws existing on domestic violence to encourage victims to come forward and discourage men from resorting to such disgraceful physical actions.

We have successfully solved 2,800 cases of domestic violence against women in the villages of Amreli District, Gujarat. Our aim is to make women and girls feel safe and secure in their own home, while giving them a voice to vocalise their situations.
